You have an AWESOME collection of militia buttons. I especially like the Scottish ones. I too have an Aberdeenshire Local Militia button similar to yours, but drool over others in your collection....

Maybe to cover the buttons when "off-duty"? There are some US button examples such as reversible screw shank buttons - unscrew and reverse to a plain back.
