That is by all appearances a very old relic of a badge. The RSF did use that latin motto, but when it was used on the flaming bomb badge I do not know.

Thanks for that Luke. I don't know where I got the idea that brass predates copper, but they seem to predominate on early Glengarry badges many plates.
Early lugs are also frequently of a round wire...

A pouch badge is most plausible. The Somerset LI loved their number 13 and continued to wear it on various insignia well after 1881. Possibly a 20 C. badge for the band?

Well, in all honesty, if I were looking at the 13th and 78th to purchase, I would pass on them.
That said, do I know that they are bad? No. I have (dangerously) been dabbling in Glen badges over...

It is not like any of the 13th Glengarry badges I have ever seen either, the main difference in design being those reinforced string loops, amongst others as well.
It looks awfully new in the...

Any pic or link still available? GC badges were not always the straight chevrons they were "supposed" to be. As long as it is white for the 17L, it could be correct.

Earliest use of lugs; copper or brass

It is my understanding that brass lugs predate the copper type, but do they?
If indeed they do, what is might be approximate time for the copper type? I have badges from the 1880s with copper.
