Its a known, unofficial trade badge worn by some members of the Royal Artillery in WW1,for what is believed to be a 'Telegraphist'.

Quite often seen on soldiers who are also qualified...

If its a star above he is probably a Quartermaster 3rd Class or 2nd class if also a star below.

A post WW2 trade, 1948 & 1946.

The photo dates 1880's to 1890's, probably c. 1885. He is a private in a Volunteer Infantry Battalion, or its pre decessor a Rifle Volunteer Corps.

I cannot see any badge sufficiently to ID it.

He would have had the same uniform as the others including the belt, but they wear a scarlet apron down their front, a bit like the leopard skin that Drummers wear. I assume its for uniform...

Would they not have grabbed any number of badges out of their stores and painted them up, irrespective of age or slider markings, both of which would be of no significance to them?
