late great war early post war wolseley helmet

a recent purchase, WWI type wolseley sun helmet, the head band is mounted on cork buffers which was phased out by c.1922, and has all the characteristics of a late great war sun helmet or possibly...

I wonder if it has been retouched by the photographer, as the buttons look odd as well and it was quite common to retouch photo's, it is not just a photoshop thing.

I believe this is an uncommon makers mark by Gaunt dating to c. 1974 from what I read on page 50 of the aa book, flatbottomed G with no fullstop after LTD

The rank is field grade officer, so major or lt colonel.

The red thing is to raise or lower the crown at the front, a feature phased out by the late 1920's I think
