Well, I certainly don't think that the photograph is spurious in any way whatsoever, it looks perfectly normal, moreover, there is enough evidence to suggest that members of the regiment concerned...

I very much doubt if it is an officers badge, you would expect it to be both better made and finished rather differently if it were, still a most pleasing thing though.
