Divers Badges

Hi Steve

The 'F' stands for 'Free Diver' and badges bearing this were in use in the Royal Navy between 1960 and 1964. I have no idea what the term 'Free Diver' actually signifies.

Royal Hospital School

And here are some similar buttons attributed to the Greenwich Hospital School by the National Maritime Museum - who of course occupy the site of the old Greenwich Hospital School itself.

Appreciate the advice! I'll check Aussie ABE books and see what I can find. I think volume 5 would be the most useful for me but it sounds as if it will be hard to get! But I'll keep...

Help to identify badges

Hi

I wonder if you could confirm the identity of the two patches shown below. The Crossed Swords and Boomerang I believe to be the formation patch of the Ist Infantry Brigade Group and dating to...

R.N. COMMANDO shoulder title

To complete the story I should have added that between 1976 and 1995, commando qualified RN personnel attached to RM units wore a white-on-blue ROYAL NAVY COMMANDO shoulder title. This was worn on...

Torpedo Badge

Well, I have to admit it seems that I was wrong! I have, whilst looking for something else, come across the rules for wearing the Torpedo Badge - and it refers to stars AND bars!

I have attached...

Torpedo Badge

Hi Trevor

I'm afraid a single torpedo badge with a star above has nothing to do with being torpedoed or mined five times. The survivors 'Torpedo Badge' was only ever issued without addition of any...

It's a mystery (to me) Old Naval College?

Right I've checked my records and I can confirm the identity of these buttons.

Firstly, the Royal Naval Hospital closed in 1869 and the site reopened as the Royal Naval College in 1873.

These...

The literal translation of 'Collegium Regium Navale' is 'King's College in dock'!

The crown featured on...

And since this is the photographic section of the forum, here is a photo of the sort of small power boats used by the RNMBR.
