As its already on photographic paper rather than as a Cabinet Photo it appears to be a copy of an original already, so wouldnt get any clearer.

The photo dates 1880's to 1890's, probably c. 1885. He is a private in a Volunteer Infantry Battalion, or its pre decessor a Rifle Volunteer Corps.

I cannot see any badge sufficiently to ID it.

He would have had the same uniform as the others including the belt, but they wear a scarlet apron down their front, a bit like the leopard skin that Drummers wear. I assume its for uniform...

Men who were POW were put on the Roll of the Reserve Battalion for the duration, hence the 3rd on his MM.

Basically ignore it, he won it in a fighting Battalion in France, the 4th.
