Northern Rhodesia Police Air Wing

The formation of the above is documented in Tim Wright's History of The Northern Rhodesia Police, page 352 et seq but for those who do not have immediate access to this volume -
As part of the Northern Rhodesia Police Reserve, formed c 1953 from the Flying Clubs of Lusaka,Livingstone,Nkana,Ndola,Luanshya and Mufulira.most of the pilots had flown in the Armed Forces, used a variety of light aircraft, some belonging to members and others to the clubs themselves.A pilot required a valid licence and either to have logged 500 hours or a minimum of 150 hours as pilot-in-charge,having landed at 10 different aerodromes, flown 3 different types of aircraft and completed a 300mile cross country flight. They were not allowed to pilot a plane on operational duties unless they owned it !
I do not know what happened to this formation on Independance in November 1964,whilst the Police Reserve continued as the Zambia Police Reserve,I would assume that the unit was probaby subsumed into a Government Flying Service,or similar. They had a short and not uneventfull career and provided valuable support in a vast territory not endowed with good land communications.
