London Rifle Brigade insignia?
I would be most grateful if anyone can share information on metal shoulder titles and battle patches worn by the battalions of London Rifle Brigade?
Any insights appreciated! |

Regarding the "LRB" titles, were these only worn by officers, or is there any evidence to the contrary? |

This photo shows the cloth title worn by a Sergeant with what looks like a (square?) patch below.

1/5th wore a 2" green square below the shoulder titles as a battalion i/d. The LRB History, P114, says that the cloth shoulder titles were introduced in early June 1915. On the first day of the Somme 1/7/16 the bombers of each company wore additional marks of tapes on the left shoulder strap as follows A Company - blue, B Company - green, C Company - yellow, D Company - red, (this info is from a copy of the Battalion orders held in the IWM Library). 2/5th wore a 2 1/2" x 1" blue rectangle vertically below the shoulder titles Mike |

Hi Doug,
Here's a photo of a LRB Rfn in 1939/40 with a similar patch to that shown in Jon's post. It's from this excellent website: http://8thriflebrigade.co.uk/biographies/ Mark |

Several Territorial units serving with the British Expeditionary Force in 1939/1940 ignored instructions to remove approved dress ‘deviations’ on mobilisation by continuing to wear regimental designations on service and battle dress; photographs taken in France record ‘LRB’ worn on service dress by The London Rifle Brigade in Imperial War Museum photo O 515.
