Australian Officers in shorts and Sam Brown belt.....

An interesting photo from diggerhistory files, showing four Australian officers in a combination of uniform only seen in that country. Would that pass muster with a British RSM.....

Tropical dress!

Well a real relaxed and unconventional army for sure.

I cannot see a problem, quite a smart and practical order of dress and four rather smart officers too! (Makes a change).

Me neither. Looks like pretty standard tropical parade uniform to me. In any case most of us stopped being frighten of the RSM about the time we put up our third pip! Thereafter he was usually a friend and ally!

Not only tropical dress. We wore shorts with Polyesters in Australia during summer.

Voltigeur 21-06-09 01:15 PM

Hi getns, it's just that here in Canada, we don't have a tropical climate. For us a heat wave is when it is between 80 and 90 degrees F (25 t0 35 C) sometimes a bit more...... for a week.:)

Where shorts also worn in Perth ? Or were they only worn in Darwin, Cairns and Townsville?

I've worn them in Wodonga, Adelaide, Melbourne, anywhere you can get away with it. Poly shorts or JG shorts (pre-cams)

Same as Seanus. Wore them all over Australia, including Perth, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Darwin, Victoria and in the United States . Also wore JG shorts as working dress. Nothing special about them.

Tropical dress Malaya circa 1960s (early). Standard issue uniform - similar (except for the slouch hat) to British tropical dress of the same period except for the type of cloth used in the shirts.

We ORs wore the same style in Hong Kong mid 60s and even had locally made shirts and shorts in similar material.
