Yes, tidy price but a rare item. It's out of my collecting era, but every now and then I see something I feel like getting just as its a nice example. But like you, not for me. I have other purchases in mind ;-)

Yes a rare item, BUT is it genuine????

I have had the privilege of viewing 5 of these in South Africa (3 in private collections and two in Museum collections) and all of these have been the same. In all cases the title reads "SOUTH AFRICAN AVIATION' curved over a horizontal "CORPS".

This is the first example to my knowledeg where South African has been abreviated to 'S A'. I would be very weary on spending that amount on someone that may be 'fictitious' even if the construction thereof appears to be OK.

Scary price, I'm sure William will be able to confirm if this eBay item is OK?

Found this other version image which confirms Stephens comment.

I have my doubts, it looks very new and I agree on Stephen's opinion regarding the "SA" used on this title.

This is the example I have in my collection.

I am not in Durban at the moment to compare my example of the Aviation Corps title. But for what its worth, I think that this one looks way too new apart from all the other differences to verified examples. Sadly someone will want it to be real and shell out the money and then spend the rest of his collecting life trying to explain why its 'right'.

Mike

Interesting and useful comments. It's pre my collecting era of 1939-45 but I appreciate the scarcity of the SAAC insignia, and its always useful to learn more. I imagine the seller is on the forum as there is a member with the same user name.

HI I have no connection with this shoulder titles but im certain its original , not seen this version before but is very similar to the RFC titles in construction and stitching Ive had and as for condition this is not relative I have seen bought and owned cloth badges that have been 90 years old and look so fresh like they were just manufactured ? all depends how are where they have been stored .

SAAC badges

Dear Brain,
I am presently working on a publication on the aerial activities during the campaign in German South West Africa 1914-15.
I noticed that you had a shoulder flash of ther SAAC.
I would like your permission to copy and use it in my publication.
