and 5 more
26. castle, gate or church, letters G.R.C., G17, backmark J. Smart, 32 Walbrook (In 2010 it was on the (now defunct) golf buttons website by (the late) John Sagi) 28. monogram O.M.S., chrome 26 mm, b/m Emeralda, Cardiff (I have searched for 'motor services' e.g. City of Oxford Motor Services, but never found evidence) 29. old english letters or text 'Philorth', gilt 16 mm; Firmin London 31. monogram letters C.T.C., Gilt 14 mm, Buttons Limited <crossed swords> 32. engraved letters O.D.S., gilt 19 mm; no backmark |
You mention that button 26 appeared on a defunct Golf Buttons site so instead of GRC it seems more likely RGC, as in R... Golf Club.
Unfortunately many areas use the Castle or Church as you know, have checked local Clubs to me and the nearest similar is Reigate but the Castle on there arms has only two Towers so no link. Not much use I'm afraid but enjoying viewing these items. Regards Simon. |
I think the black JMT button might be the bus operator Jersey Motor Transport.

Thank you both for your replies. It is nice to read that the thread is being appreciated.
Simon Re No. 26: if it is a golf club, then it is R.G.C. Backmarks on other buttons have James Smart Ltd, 32 Walbrook E.C., but I have not been able to date this company. Thank you for the suggestion to search on the letters and a castle in a city's coat of arms. Hoot: I had found the Jersey Motor Transport as an option. Unfortunately I have no proof. |

42. a shamrock with a five pointed star in the centre leaf, leather 18 mm, no backmark 43. a large building, gilt 19 mm, backmark: treble, gilt 44. a coat of arms with coronet and scroll with text "Honor", gilt 24 mm, Firmin & Sons Ld, London. Looking at its quality it is more military than livery. 45. I came up with: Sans Souci Theatre, Calcutta, India. (1839-1849) It is gilt 14 mm, backmark Ranken & Co. Comments on this ID are most welcome. 47. Barbarian SC, Livingstone, chrome 20 mm, Superior Quality. Much researched, no clue. |
