Button ID?
3 Attachment(s)
Hello All,
I have just joined the forum as I have had trouble identifying a few buttons. My father is currently setting up a display at Government House in Hobart, Tasmania. All of the finds were found on the grounds of Govt. House and most have dated from 1800 - 1900. The first 1 I think is a navy button but am finding it difficult to identify due to the script on the top. It has 6 letters from what I can see. The seconds I originally thought was a royal marines button but there is no evidence of writing at the top. The 3rd may be a livery button but I am unsure. Thank you for any help in advance. |

Hi :)
1 Might be merchant navy as no crown 2 might be cunard line 3 looks like a fashion button Backmarks might narrow the country:):) T |
In order of appearance
1. I agree on your assumption it could be an early Royal Marines button 2. British & North American Royal Mail (1840-1878, when renamed Cunard) 3. a fashion button |
Cheers for the help.
Don't think I would have gotten the Cunard Line ID without help. As far as back-marks would have them but there is nothing left of the back of the buttons to get a back-mark. However, given where they were found I would say English as Hobart Town was an English colony. |
