Worth a punt?
Or saying cheap but the Gaunt mark to the rear is unclear. Not often we see this badge popping up though.

Has it been coated/painted with something ?
Not one I'd be interested in. . |
Looks to be chrome plated or something.

I think the photography is certainly very unclear, you could ask the seller to send you better images.

Both Wylie and Gaunt examples can often be found nickel plated and some do have a finer jeweller type hinge to their reverse.

Wonder if that mark you have so keenly picked up on (U C? L C?) isn't the initials of the owner, much as I have an unplated example with an initial and surname stamped thereon. |
Named 1916 badge

Here is the named badge. Ernest Shackleton's sister?

I'm not convinced that the "chrome" finish is original/period and the fact that the badge hasn't been snapped up would indicate that others may also have doubts.

Cannot say that I am too keen on the maker mark to the reverse. Poor photos…..I would have expected real interest if it was any good.

I make no comment on the badge that is the subject of this thread as it’s outside my interests.
However, I would say never underestimate the powers of poor eBay photography. About 2 years ago now there was what turned out to be a genuine 1916 all GM Leinster Regiment listed on a £12.99 Buy It Now for a couple weeks until someone I know took a gamble. Unfortunately I deleted the listing pictures to free up memory on my phone but suffice to say the scans were so bright and poor with lurid colour enough to put every eBay dealer and knowledgeable collector off. Sometimes it’s worth a calculated risk especially when it can be returned for a refund. |
The ONLY thing that would put me off bidding is the shipping arrangement….. enough said! D.J.

I agree that eBay photos (and some of mine ! :o) can be misleading but if you ask for better photos you run the risk of someone else jumping in and buying the item while you are waiting on a reply.
In this case , while the front of the badge looks 'perfect' the rear clearly shows where the 'chrome' finish has not been applied properly/evenly . My initial thought was chrome paint (spray can) but even if it is real chrome I still wouldn't buy it. . |
If I remember correctly chrome didn't come out until some 10 years after Ww1 if it is chromed , I have a nickel plated one somewhere.
|
The price sought may be an issue given how common these badges are a quick glance upon ebay shows that they can still be had for less than the asking price.

It is not chrome-plated. I have yet to see a badge that is only chrome-plated on one side.
