Help with Cavalry Sword initial's
 

Good Day All

I am doing some research for my local Royal Can. Legion Branch. We recently received some memorabilia from the family of a deceased veteran. Besides serving in WW2 (RCAF) he joined the Halifax rifles (Sgt,) the then the IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards here in Ottawa (retd. Maj.). One Item we received is a 1853 pattern Cavalry Troopers Sword, on the pommel is a V over PEI over 43. I have tried to associate it with the PEI Light Horse but the lineage does not seem to go pre 1901. Any help identifying the inscription would be appreciated.

Jim, according to Skennerton ‘The Broad Arrow’, this is an 1859 Colonial Volunteers Unit Marking, so would fit in nicely with your 1853 Pattern. Ben

Thanks Ben appreciate the quick response. Would this be a "generic" marking or can it be associated with a specific unit, which I assume (????) would be a cavalry /dragoon/ lancer unit ?????

It would seem to be more generic than specific (found an 1858 pistol with the same marking online) hopefully a local history website your side of the pond will have the answer. Interestingly the example shown in Skennerton is also of an 1853p ( albeit Antigua) so they must have had a mounted branch of some sort.

Thanks again Ben much appreciated. I see on your attachment that P.E.I. is listed to Prince Edward Island (Canada), This is what I had suspected (hoped) now all I have to do is find a Cavalry unit ( V ) in P.E.I. during the mid 19th century and what 43 means.

Jim, I think you’ll find that the 43 is simply the rack number for that particular sword.

36th Regiment Prince Edward Island Light Horse

36th Regiment Prince Edward Island Light Horse was a regiment of cavalry formed in the Canadian Army in 1908 as part of the Militia.

Lineage:

1 Jun 1901: "L" Squadron, Prince Edward Island Mounted Rifles raised.

1 Oct 1901: Redesignated as "L" Squadron, Canadian Mounted Rifles

1 Apr 1903: Redesignated as Prince Edward Island Light Horse

1 Apr 1914: Redesignated as 36th Prince Edward Island Light Horse

15 Mar 1920: Redesignated as The Prince Edward Island Light Horse as part of the Otter Committee recommendations for the reorganization of the Militia.1
