To be precise this button was worn by the Royal Indian Navy (and it's predecessors) from 1877 until India became a republic in 1951. There were many name changes over that period but the button remained the same. The buttons in use prior to 1902 had the Imperial Crown rather than the Victorian Queen's Crown. Those in use after that date had the King's Crown. The name 'Royal Indian Navy' came into use in 1934. The name (and the button) continued to be used after India became an independent Dominion in 1947. They remained in use until India became a republic in 1951, when both the name and the button were dropped.

Following partition in 1947 the Royal Pakistan Navy came into existence. Personnel of the RPN continued to wear the same uniform, insignia and buttons as they had prior to Indian independence. In fact, not only did the Royal Indian Navy and Royal Pakistan Navy continue to wear the same uniforms but ships of both navies continued to fly the White Ensign! Pakistan continued to use these buttons until it became an islamic republic in 1956.
