FSSF sweetheart pin

Here is a nice FSSF sweetheart or association pin, no markings on the reverse. Looks to be period correct, 3/4" tall.

Pretty sure that is an association / veteran's pin.

One on eBay for £460.00 ::eek:

"Original WWII US Army First Special Service Force DI / DUI / Distinctive Unit Insignia / Crest.
The DI is in excellent condition. Die struck with no hallmark, the pinback attachment has a fully working roller catch lock. The DI measures 26mm by 14mm."

Then there is the repro version for US$17.00 (£13.02). :D

"REPRODUCTION WW 2 US Army First Special Service Force (FSSF), Di Distinctive Insignia.
Gold colored stamped metal with red enameling, pin back.
Size is 5/8 x 1 3/8 inches."

His valuation in my opinion is out to lunch.

If a pin has a screw-back (some marked BIRKS) and visible horizontal lines in the red enamel, then it is wartime.

Here is the private purchase wartime pin acquired by Sgt. Charles Mann, 4-3.
Marked BIRKS STERLING.

The pin on ebay is junk; just a common association pin.
Mike's example looks promising but I can't tell in there are lines in the enamel.

To add to the conversation, here's a FSSF pin I have in my collection -- well made, 35mm by 15mm. I was unaware that the FSSF even had a DUI, so I assume this was an older association pin.

Donovan
