Could the forum assist me please. Is this a cap or collar badge?

Thank you, Keith

Hi Keith,

There has been some previous discussion on the forum about the authenticity of these collars where there is a complete and distinct frame around the "1st Tank Battalion" and "Canada" banners. On badges that are definitely originals the frame is open at either end and the font is thicker. The closed frame collars are mainly seen with sliders which is suspect as well.

The brown enamel coating also brings up a red flag as all the good examples of this collar and the associated cap badge that I have seen are in a pickled (green enamel) finish.

I would be interested to hear comments from others!

Cheers, Ian.

From archives, it appears that the run of badges for the battalion were made by Hemsley's. As Ian indicated, they were done in a pickled finish.

The example shown by Keith matches the one in Martin Marsh’s catalogue of reproduction badges. Note the shape of the crown and as already mentioned the tablet boarder. So rather than Hemsley I’d say produced by Marsh with a pickled finish circa 1980s (or later).
