Glengarry Colors???

Glengarry colors of WW1 highland battalions and regiments? I know the Argyles wore the dk blue with red & white checking only, while Scottish Rifles wore rifle green and Black Watch wore the plain dk blue (almost black). The London Scottish I believe wore gray (?). How about others such as the 10th Kings or Tyneside Scottish? Did pipers in some battalions/regiments wear different headgear? I know many wore different badges. Maybe we could come up with a comprehensive list. Thanks!

I collect modern scottish militaria, so I don't know if my knowledege are right if applied to WWI period.

Pipers of all regiments wear plain glengarry.
  • Black Watch: dark blue plain glengarry without silk ribbon under the badge, red torie;
  • Argyll & Sutherland Hldrs: checkered dark blue glengarry, red and white, red torie
  • Cameron Hldrs: dark blue plain glengarry; red torie;
  • Seaforth Hldrs: chekered dark blue glengarry in red, white and blue; red torie;
  • Gordon Hldrs: chekered dark blue glengarry in red, white and blue; red torie;
  • King's Own Scottish Borderers: chekered dark blue glengarry in red, white and blue; red torie;
  • Royal Scots: chekered dark blue glengarry in red, white and blue; red torie;
  • Highland Light Infantry: rifle green plain glengarry; black torie;
  • Royal Scots Fusiliers: chekered dark blue glengarry in red, white and blue; red torie (not sure of this);
  • Cameronians (scottish rifle): rifle green plain glengarry; black torie;
  • London Scottish: dark blue plain glengarry; blue torie;

This is my knowledge, but I could be wrong.

Glengarry Colours

Cannot assist re Glengarry colours but if I can offer my two'penntworth on the pictures submitted by Tinesideirish- these come from the George Phillip book which has its errors. These are coloured Field Service caps and NOT Glengarry's. Another good source for Coloured FS caps is the Bulletin Military Historical Society Special Number from 2002. It only covers Infantry but is far more detailed. I don't own a copy but use one in the University Library at Cambridge.

Glengarr Colours

Although some of the illustrations in the George Philps book may well contain errors it is plain to see that the representations are NOT all of Field Service Caps and the Scottish Regiments are shown quite correctly with Glengarries, as can be seen by the representation of the tapes or tails at rear.
