Opinions wanted on “Three Feathers” Badge
 

I would be grateful for opinions on this Cap Badge which from Gaylor’s book seems to be the Cap badge of the Denbighshire Hussars. It is lugged and I show it next to another Cap Badge in order to give an idea of size. I attach a picture, and apologise if it is not posted in the correct sub forum

Not my thing but think I’ve seen them sold as 12th Lancers arm badges (albeit the dealer selling it as such is neither trustworthy or reliable IMO) and 3rd DG arm badges. Not Denbigh Hussars I don’t think.

Its not the DHY..... I think its the arm badge of the Bugler/Trumpeter of the 10th Hussars or 3DG? I dont have my Lineker & Dine book to hand.

I am interested as to why you don’t think that it is the Denbishire Hussars, since it appears exactly like the example in Gaylor’s book. I should state, what must be obvious to you now, that I have only a little experience in this field.

"The Books" are not always correct :)

* Those brass looking badges are/were "Bronzed"..... and the white metals are the Bands collars.

As Griff says books can contain significant errors - K&K and Gaylor especially.

I’d be interested to know what edition of Gaylor it is in and plate no? Have checked my 1st edn and the badge shown as Denbighshire Hussars definitely isn’t your badge.

With later edition Gaylor’s you have to be especially careful as a forum member and well known dealer assisted in many of the badges being re-photographed. Surprisingly despite him dealing in ‘only original British Militaria’ several common fakes are now sadly pictured in this book...

Hi Luke,
It is the 7th revised edition 2003 by Leo Cooper books. The badges are not photographed in it, but are “drawn.” I didn’t realise that the editions seem to have been “watered down” as time went on.

It ‘should’ be the same set of pictures then.

Both badges are very similar but slightly different. Have a close look at the central vein of the middle feather. Said vein on the Denbigh Hussars badge in my edition finishes with a twist off to the left. On your badge it finishes with a twist to the right.

I can see the twist in the central vein that you point out on my badge, but unfortunately the drawings on my kindle edition are not distinct enough to identify which way it twists. I am, however, sure that you are correct.
