Anyone have a copy? If so could you please reference and perhaps identify the specific particulars of the badge pictured? Thanks.

The titles (13 in total and placement) and lack of a "title scroll" seem to fit with what Rowe & Carmen call version "D" in their guide to patterns for this regiment.

There are few other specifics provided other than " it is reliably thought that the the plate bearing thirteen battle honours dates from about c. 1880" (page 83).


They do not appear to illustrate this plate but do illustrate what they call version "E" which has the title scroll " Sixteenth Lancers" and the battle honours placed in a different orientation. In 1900 two additional honours were awarded and a KC crown plate with these additional honours is recorded as "version F"

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to reply in detail. I was pretty sure that it was a valid item as replication of an example so rarely encountered would make no sense. This partial badge was offered to me at what I thought to be a very substantial price. So apparently rare but incomplete, so dithering. Thanks again for verifying its authenticity.

Lancer plates, including officers have been electroform copied for many years.

This in the case of officer plates includes the component pieces being reproduced separately so I would not take this appearing on its own as an absolute guarantee of authenticity.

Electroform replicas produce a very high fidelity copy, accurate to within a few microns of the original when well executed. Some regalia specialists also have the skills to produce gilt and silver finishes which are extremely close matches to originals.

So in a nutshell these are a minefield within a minefield of hobby.

I am yet to hear from anyone a fool proof technique for spotting the better quality electoforms.
