Having once again ventured out of my area of expertise, could I ask for opinions as to the authenticity of these two badges?

Left one is bad, right’s good.

Thanks for your help, Luke. Can you point out telltale traits that give the bad one away? Trying to learn...

As mentioned, the one on the left is a known fake by the characteristics of the strike, metal colour, and the classic repro slider as seen on so many bad badges.

Gentlemen, thank you both for your help and insights. Once again, I am reminded that dabbling in cap badge collecting is risky, and that even buying from reputable dealers isn't always safe. Both of these badges were purchased from well-known and respected dealers...

Sorry, only just seen this. The tail ends too should be voided on the flat crown type. The exception to this (Friday afternoon jobs aide) is the Lambourne made badge - which is a completely different die to the two shown.

Also the BB badges are early, pre 1913 so should be good quality with a nice deep crown and fixings to match an early piece i.e. nothing like then above for all the reasons CB mentions.

Sadly I’ve noticed some very shonky offerings on well respected sites lately... my advice is buy every item on its merits not because of whose selling it.
