Oman Gendarmerie

These items are about to come up for sale.

They belonged to Captain John Charles Clements, Oman Gendarmerie.

He served with a couple of different units on contract in Oman from approx 1972 to 1977.

Served in the Brit army as a Trooper with RHA and KSLI as a subaltern. Also with the Kings African Rifles as a subaltern during Mao Mao emergency.

Anyone have any idea of potential value?

Awra best

Many thanks, Chris.

I have passed your link on to the family and hope they enjoy your Flickr photos a much as I did.

I recognised quite a few places and things in your images and wonder if you might eventually be putting captions to any of the images?

Really very many thanks indeed for posting all those enjoyable and important images. Good work!

Awra best

William

Hello William

Thank you for your kind comments.

If you click on each photograph on Flickr a details page should come up and on there I have given a caption and location of each photograph. If not let me know.

Well done on collecting a complete set of cap badges. How did you do that as some medals were only stocked with Southern Oman Brigade ordnance depot? I just have all the separate SOLF badges and shoulder titles as at 1985: no armoured regiment cap badge but I suspect I have the shoulder title if only I could read it.

I was interested to read all cap badges were replaced by a single design in 1986/7. Is this correct? I left Oman in August 1986.

Chris,

Please send your address on a PM and I will be very happy to send you a cap badge to the Sultan of Oman's Armoured Regiment (SOAR).

Best regards

SOAR badge

Hello William

Thank you for your kind offer to send me a SOAR badge but it is not necessary. From your pictures I deduce that the SOAR badge is version 5 of the GSM badges. My HQ SOLF badge from my set is version 6 which I have.

I also have version 5 attached to my agal from my OG days. Below is a link to a photograph of the RSM of OG before it became OCR in January 1978.

OCR still wore version 5 of the GSM badge for at least a year before their new badge was made. See this link:

Andrew Kirk from SOAF was the designer of the new badge.
