Stuff is still out there... In the print article there were a couple more badges pictured. That was a nice accumulation of stuff he brought back. The professor is a bit of a case. He is reading way too much into the accumulation. Most vets I talked to just shovelled stuff into a kit bag, they didn't go selectively shopping. Except maybe for the Luger or P38. Badges and medals were not seen to be anything all that special.

As a former History student, I can say that, that is the kind of rubbish you're made to postulate (you have to make some amazing revelation from some innane bit of information, especially true in postmodernistic studies, such as the rubbish devised about the "Balinese cockfight"....), but as you say rarely was it, ooooh, my latent fascism says I'll choose this, or hmmmm, I think this hat tells a significant part of my story, more likely it was found on a table in a deserted house somewhere and it got just stuck in his pocket. I bet if we knew what stuff was worth we'd all be heading for the bunker and filling sacks with stuff....

Are there many female badge collectors out there. There was one who sold an extensive collection through Gildings in Market Harbrough about five years ago or, more accurately her executors disposed of her collection. I have had several long suffering girlfriends who have shown no real interest in my collection unless it has been to threaten to turn them into flat discs should I ever upset them...

Don't you guys talk that way about my sister! Doughnuts indeed! It was the chocolates. ;)

In light of some of the fine male specimens that I've encountered in the hobby, perhaps we need to get back to the topic of militaria.

Which brings us neatly back to the point that we never know what will be valuable in 70yrs time and it is the odd bits we 'pick' up that can be the real rarities. Good luck to them with their fortuitous find. I have had my own 'attic' find which is in the album section.
