What Machine Gun Corps Badge Do I Need?

Hi All,

I have a relative who was a Cpl Instructor in the Tank Corps during WW1.

I've managed to get his record and it shows he started in the RFA(T) before being transferred into the Machine Gun Corps on the 11th Aug 1917.

In Jan 1918 he was made a Tank Instructor before being commissioned into the Tank Corps.

So with all that in mind can anyone show me what Machine Gun Corps cap badge I should be looking for please?

Thanks a lot,

Michael

The standard MGC cap badge and shoulder titles were worn but with the letter ‘H’ beneath the latter, until such time as a discrete badge was introduced for the Tank Corps.

Thanks a lot Toby, I'll have a look at the website and start keeping my eyes open for the badge.

Michael, the Heavy Branch of the Machine Gun Corps became the Tank Corps on 27th July 1917. If your relative transferred from the RFA to the MGC on 11th August 1917 then he would have gone into either MGC(Infantry), MGC(Cavalry) or MGC(Motors) as the MGC(Heavy) no longer existed as such. He must have then transferred to the Tank Corps later on so it would seem.

Thanks very much for the reply Hoot, I'll have another look at the dates on his record, I've probably got them muddled up.

Can anyone tell me if there are any give away signs for spotting a fake MGC badge? I have searched and can't find anything obvious on the forum.

Thanks a lot,

Michael

I've checked his service record and it definitely has the date as 11 Aug 1917. I'll attach a couple of clips of the record, maybe I'm missing something that will make more sense to someone else.
