Modern General Service Corps Cap Badge

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell me when the General Service Corps cap badge was first used for recruits? I have it entering the inventory in 2007 - was this specifically for recruits at this time?

See: https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...act=mrc&uact=8

NSN 8455-99-703-0655
Pattern No. D01068

Regards,

Chris

I was at the RLC Museum in Deepcut around that time (2009/10) A whole intake of recruits came in wearing the GSC cap badge.
I asked an instructor what wss the badge being worn and he explained to me that the recruits wore them until they passed out and then would go on to wear their unit cap badge when trade training.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Ken,

I wonder if it was reintroduced in 2007 specifically for recruits?

The only one I ever saw being worn was around 1974, an anod. al. one by a squaddie at Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry.
As I recall, he was a dog handler.

Thanks Leigh,

Only concerned with the 2007 item at the moment.

I have this one by FIRMIN packed date December 2008.

2007 seems a reasonable start date for the badge to be worn by recruits in initial Phase 1 training.

Thanks Tim,

Does anyone know if this modern version was used by any other unit/organisation/etc. from 2007 onwards?

No just recruits. The ones that have been issued always have the slider cut shirt so the badge sits low on the beret.

Chris,
It is a possibility that civilians joining 77th Brigade directly as reservists with special qualifications might be badged, at least initially, as General Service pending allocation to a Corps. See
https://www.army.mod.uk/who-we-are/f...on/77-brigade/

Alan, Tim;

Thanks for the updates. I came across this badge in my collection and while I had some research on it I realised I had no real idea who actually wore it! Good to fill this gap in my knowledge.

Chris
