Ron,

The badge is in OWEN but unfortunately he doesnt give any dates.

Agree with Simon, lovely thing, thanks for showing, as far as I'm aware, no cadets in South Africa for quite a while now. Regards Mark

I can remember reading somewhere 1900-45?
Also was it connected to King Edwards school?

Hi, The badges were worn from 1905 to possibly 1913. The 2nd Bn was designated "Johannesburg". The Transvaal Cadets ceased to exist in 1913 when the Union Cadets were established. Regards Andrew

Thanks Andrew, very helpful would there have been any backing worn with the badge?
Ron.

Hi Ron, Owen has the big badge as a cap badge and the small badge as a beret badge. I need to dig into that a bit. Regards Andrew

I think pre 1913 they would not have worn beret's?
Ron

I found an article that states that the Transvaal Cadet Company system replaced the Battalions at the end of 1905. I would assume that they wore the universal Transvaal Cadets badge after this. That makes these badges short lived. Going through some other notes, I believe that the cadets were operational from the end of 1902, even if not officially. I am still digging. Regards Andrew

Transvaal Cadets 2nd Battalion (Joburg).
Bronzed officers service dress button 24mm by Frazer Ross Glasgow.
Circa 1902-13? Mike Lukitch suggests 1902-05.
