Radar also came into being during the course of WWII & went a long way towards the winning of the war, especially during the crucial Battle of the Atlantic. If HMS Suffolk had not possessed elementary radar it is very possible Bismarck would not have been located or successfully tracked & sunk in 1941.

In 1941 radar was originally called RDF (Radio Direction Finder) but was later changed to Radio Detection and Ranging. As the war progressed many advancements were made in radar including HFDF {High Frequency Direction Finder – “Huff Duff” to sailors} which contributed greatly to the successful conclusion to the U-boat war in the Atlantic.
Radar rate badges made their appearance in 1944 & the wartime rate badges lasted until the specialized RCN rate badges came in in 1949-50.

Gunnery ratings could also specialize in Radar – the Gunnery Radar Control rate badge also appeared in 1944 & was worn by Gunnery ratings who had taken specialized courses in radar direction control.
