Lord Strathcona's Horse sun helmet flash
 

The Lord Strathcona's wore the tropical helmet/sun helmet with a flash in regimental colour during the 1920's-30's. The flash was rectangular, with the regimental colours of scarlet and green, but worn on the point. (Eg turned 90° from the horizontal.) Question, which colour goes to the left as viewed?

How about red on top over green. See the chart of distinguishing patches of the CEF.

It is not a CEF patch, but they probably wore it in that manner.

I always thought of the sun helmet flash as diamond-shaped with the red half uppermost. It has been a while since I looked at my reference material on the Strathcona's, but there is an illustration in Always a Strathcona by W.B. Fraser between pp 128-129 that shows an officer wearing the sun helmet with the flash prominently displayed. It could be construed as a square I suppose; a bit reminiscent of the commercial currently on television about oat cereal being squares or diamonds:). I hang my head in shame that an RCR (regimental rogue) beat me to the punch on this one.:(
