Interesting Gaunt Marks on 2 A/A Badges
 

While going through the A/A badges from a recent group of badges I noticed a few unusual "to me anyway" Gaunt maker marks. Both have tried to obscure the word London within the maker mark. On the 9th-12th Lancers they have crosshatched through the word on the slider despite the fact that the maker mark appears again on the badge correctly.

On the Grenadier Guards badge it looks as though the word was removed from the die. Leaving only JR Gaunt

Could it have been done during a Gaunt transition from London to Birmingham?? Or is there another reason??

Never seen that before - and I wonder why they bothered.

Slider looks like its been squeezed in the jaws of a vice to me.

That sure is a possibility as it appears on both sides of the slider.

I'm fairly sure the vice marks are from after Gaunt was done with the badge. The other mark is sometimes accompanied by a separate LONDON or after 1966 a separate BIRMINGHAM mark.

Here is the 9th/12ths Officer badge made first from the same die.... thats why the first run of AAs have the double marking ..... because the male die has the makers mark in it..... the second production will see the male die annealed.... therefore removing the MM and altering the male die and giving it a new back image.

How come annealing completely removes the maker mark yet none of the detail of the obverse of the badge? Apart from the fact yours is two piece and has a different reverse maker mark.

The female die does not have to be annealed like the male. Therefore does not change. The female can crack over time.... as seen in some badges. The PWORWY has a cracked female die..... the "Old" Firmin Motto female die (pre 1946) was cracked.... to name two.

Interesting - not seen that before.

Note that LONDON is still on the body of the 9th/12th Lancers badge.

....Just to add another two examples.

The Gaunt AA Motto is double marked on the body and on the slider because the Officers Silver was make from the first strike (1962).

....this AA Firmin, below, also has a double MM strike as well (rare one). Somewhere out there is the Hallmarked silver version .... probably for the early 1970s ...... I have yet to see it..... but I am sure it will turn up one day.
