Artillery Shell

G'day guys

On behalf of the Upwey/Belgrave RSL, Running Rabbits Military Museum, where I volunteer, I am trying to identify an artillery shell that is in our collection and hope that some of our learned Arty members will be able to assist.

The shell is of brass and is 350mm in over all length.
The base is 95mm in diameter, the base is wider than the case and the case its self is grooved like a rimless rifle round,.
The base of the case is also grooved about 13mm in from the edge of the base.
The base has markings as follows, 97 over 74, 176 over M5, and single mark that looks a bit like a K. There are also other small marks that are hard to read.
The neck of the case is 60mm.

I hope that this helps, any assistance would be much appreciated. Sorry I cant post any photos.

Regards

Phil.

Hi Phil

60mm is unusual, could it be 57mm?

Hi Rob

Thanks for replying, using a steel tape measure its right on 60mm, my digital calliper has died and needs a new battery - next week. I will post again once Ive got a battery.

Phil.

Is it a shell or a shell casing? If its a casing then it may have flared out slightly at the top, they are often found slightly deformed by removing the shell (projectile) or trying to replace one.

I think I have my facts right here.

From the information you have supplied it is a Cartridge Case, not a shell. It may be Soviet or US, pictures would help a lot, or a drawing of the base showing the position of the markings.
