Here is an item I have just cleaned with soap and toothbrush, just about to get the black of it with Silverwash toothbrush and matchstick - I hope!
Any other ideas welcome, cheers ? |

Right result using Silverwash and matchstick gave up on the toothbrush creating a mess all over the wife’s tablecloth, until the end when it came in handy under hot water tap to wash of crud - this being the result, note I had my Tea so this didn’t take so long!
No Hallmarks that I can find but believe it to be Silver (took a gamble on badge from EBay) Personally think it came up good a few places where there are bits of black but enough for now, hope you enjoy the results! All the bests Billy |
Billy,
Its a pre 1871 Royal Artillery Pouch Badge. It may have been brass/gilt/white metal or silver originally but it has been converted by the addition of a pin and silver plating into a sweetheart type badge. regards |
Thanks Simon, picked a spot on the rear Limber and with a sharp knife scraped away but remained Silver no Brass underneath, original colour was black before I 1st cleaned it then took pictures after a 2nd clean with Fairy liquid and Toothbrush before a final clean in Silverwash! Last photo’s.
Originally had 3 screw posts before broach fitting added, I did think it was Silver-plated but with no brass coming through I would think it must be Silver, pity I can’t pass it to you but am leaning towards it being Silver? Anything else I might try to check? White paper turns Black, but would do so with Plating! All the best Billy |

Better picture’s (all the lights on! don’t tell the Wife!)
The Limber with scraping marks, no brass visible underneath. Simon you’ve given me a date for this and oldest item to the Artillery I now have! many thanks for that. Even if not Silver. I could have it returned to three posts but know if that would be a good idea? Likely to leave as it is. |
Victorian badges were of such fine quality and this is an example. Very nice.
