Officers - No Collar badges
 

This is us (Victoria Bks] having as good a go as we could at PDs at Windsor castle in the summer of 1982.I have never understood why our Officers did not wear collar badges, Always plenty around on dealers sites.Perhaps they just done away with them in the 1960s or somthing?

Yes, looks it from officers and ORs cap badges etc.

I cannot see shoulder titles on any of them either.

Theyre armed with SLRs, would all regiments be wearing cloth shoulder titles in 1982 and prior to their adopting the SA80?

Officer's Service Dress for the Royal Hampshire Regiment was in the dark Barathea of the Prince of Wales's Division in Guards Division shade. Worn with bronzed buttons and rank badges and without collar badges, again emulating the practice in the Brigade of Guards.
A few of these dress distinctions were carried forward in amalgamation into the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment.

Yes Royal Hampshire you are correct no shoulder titles.the chrome belt buckles just had a slot so we had to bend the slider upwards to put the badge on them.regards gary

You’ve raised an interesting point Monty and a little bit of research reveals that apart from a few of the war-raised service battalions and the odd TF battalion such as the 6th Duke of Connaught’s, or the 7th with their dog gauge, Hampshire Regiment battalions of WW1 also did not wear collar badges with service dress. It certainly seems to have been the preference of the regular battalions. There are plenty of photographs confirming the varying practice. When collar badges were worn they were similar to the service dress bronze version of the officers star shaped badge worn on the cap.

However, interestingly when the option of an alternative type of blue patrol uniform was offered in 1911, the regiment did opt for the second (new) type with open, stepped collar worn with a white, stiff collared shirt and black, ribbed silk tie. The two patterns became known as Type A and Type B and it was stipulated that whichever type was chosen all officers of that unit were to adopt the same one. Unlike with service dress, and as with the frock coat, collar badges were universally worn on both types.

Are they wearing a medal on the left chest pocket area? If so, can anyone tell which, and if not what is it?

General service medal with clasp for Northern Ireland would be my guess in 1982.

They did a "tour" in Fermanagh , Northern Ireland : 4th January - 17th May 1982 , so that sound right.

I recall that too Mike. It was the aftermath of the Bobby Sands hunger strikers, I recall the rioting very clearly. Firing baton rounds by volleys in some cases, but that was in West Belfast, different In Fermanagh.

Yes Fermanagh was the most recent tour to the summer of 82."Y" Coy was tasked with The PDs at Windsor,With add ons like me from "B" coy.We sadly lost a member of Drums Platoon from Gurnsey at the very end of the tour.1 Para took over from us. regards Gary

At the end of the windsor stint 1st Royal Irish Rangers took over from us doing the PDs.They would repeat this the following year taking over on the falkland Islands regards Gary

I think that was still within the period when along with the Irish Guards the Rangers did not undertake tours of duty in Northern Ireland. It seemed to lead to other duties in order to retain interesting service opportunities.
