Lead Seal

Hi Fellow Badgers,
I've just purchased a badge which has a lead seal on the back fitted to the two lugs, I've never seen one before and just wondered what it means, the only thing I can think of is that it's unissued.
Can someone shed some light on this please.
Cheers.

Kev.

It could be one which was part of a sealed pattern but the tag itself has become discarded somewhere along the line (like the one on the right in the image attached) - a picture of your badge would help.

The seal is the same as in your image, but has the initial's JH on the lead seal.
It's attached too a Victorian Glengarry badge.

A lead seal.... must be difficult for them to swim, are they an endandered species ?

How does lead get dandruff?

I can't remember the full details but these must be seals were those trained to detect enemy boats because the lead did not leave traces.

Well, you can lead a seal to water ......

A horse rather than a seal, surely?

I know of one long gone dealer from Toronto who would put a wire through some opening in a badge and seal it. Presuming that it could not be exchanged and mailed back as unacceptable (or fake). They were a good source of provenance if you kept the seal on the badge! Sadly, I did not think of this, and cut the seals of, so I still have the receipt, but that does not prove that the badge I show, was the original one I purchased!

Kev - The 'JH' is Jeffrey Hoare auction house in Canada. They used to put a seal on some of their badges for the reason described in the previous post.
