No mate Australian,member of the AFC (Australian Flying Corps) rising Sun collar tabs (dogs) its just I dont know what the patch is on his top sleeve.

Looks like some sort of tape or title on the eppaulette too, just below the first pip.

If you look at the original Ebay listing for this photo and use the image zoom facility it looks like the tape on the shoulder strap has an embroidered word on it which could be 'Australia'.

I'd say he is wearing the colour patch of the battalion of 4th Aust Division (probably 13 Aust Inf Bde) that he was serving in when he applied for the AFC. It might be a photo from the period after February 1917 when the circular patch was adopted by 12 and 13 Bdes, and the end of July 1917 when the AFC patch was introduced.
