WW1 Trench Cap

Hi all, I’m interested in this cap coming up for auction https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/a...6-a9f200da205e , I’ve done a bit of research on these caps as I’ve been after one for a while and this having a Middlesex cap badge attached even better ( I know it may not of always had that badge I’ll never know for sure) from what I’ve seen and with my limited knowledge on these looks ok ?? If anyone can take a look and see what they feel about it, that would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Gerard

There is something about that 'feels' wrong. The chin strap is too wide for a Great War period cap. I would like to see more photographs, particularly of the inside, to be sure but I think that it might be a reproduction.

I am only able to see one picture of it?

copies of these are very good these days.

Im quite certain this is a copy , one made by the Great War Society living history group 30 odd years back ( Infact they were MIDDLESEX Regt. )

chin strap is wrong for a start , the trick to look for in these is originals are Machine stitched a lot of the copies for living history were hand made - just look at the flow of the stitching if you handle an example.

Thank you all for your advice, since reading it I’ve looked again at these caps and I can see the difference in the chin strap, thanks for the stitching advice, if I ever get to handle one I’ll look for sure. With this advice I’ll leave this alone and keep looking & thank you again for your help I’ve learnt something today and as always the forums help is invaluable.

Chin strap is far to wide, this is how they should look inside and out.

Note Liners do vary from that shown. Nice cap on that site.

Yes, sorry I should have said, they are not always black oil cloth inside, someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think infantry regiment chinstraps were a darker brown than the one in my image.

Chinstraps in brown leather were universal. The only variation I am aware of is that some rifle regiments wore black or blackened chinstraps.

Thanks for all the helpful information, now looking more at original ones for sale I can see the differences in the things you’ve all mentioned, that’s saved me buying a copy, I’ll keep looking now hopefully get an original at a good price somewhere :)

Disregarding the chinstrap, with just one picture-I would not be able to say good or bad. Regards, Paul.
