Latest WWI Despatch Rider Patch Image
 

Hi Gents,

Here is my latest original Great War image of the Despatch Rider insignia. A super nice studio shot with a clear image of the unofficial DR/Wheel patch, importantly with 'wings'. On the back are some details which I can only assume are correct.

This example appears to have 'wings', the first time I have seen such a design on a WWI patch as it's normally just the DR/Wheel on these early examples.


I have a few images now of these early DR patches, I really should pull them all together.

As mentioned this Great War image is the first proof I have ever seen of a DR patch 'with' wings as the standard was just the DR over a Wheel.

Well I went back into my collection and to my astonishment it appears I actually have this patch...:eek: I had previously attributed this to the inter-war period as there was no conclusive evidence of a Great War patch 'with' wings but there it is.

Astonishing and I'm more than a little chuffed. Not only do I now have proof of a 'winged' wheel patch being worn in WWI 'but' I actually have one...:)

I have been helping out in the local museum and we have recently been cleaning and checking the various uniforms that are on display.

I do not know why I hadn't noticed this before, but the Great War Royal Engineer's uniform has the unofficial Despatch Rider's badge on its right sleeve.

The uniform is genuine and even has the remnants of its paper label.

I have now managed to locate a photograph of the original owner of the Royal Engineers 1902 pattern tunic with the winged Despatch Rider's cloth badge. Unfortunately the tunic is not visible in the photograph.
