Sydney University Regiment - Colonel's Piper Badge.

Forum member Mark Corcoran posted this on his blog and also Facebook but I thought I'd share it here as many of you may not have seen it.

This is a super rare badge.

Thanks Mick,

I was slack and forgot to add the post here.

I plead 'old timer's disease' (sigh;)

Lads,

After my last gaff... in posting pretty pics on Face Blab and forgetting to post them here... I thought I'd better continue this thread with images of some other relatively scarce trade-related insignia. This time, the images are of RAR Band, Scottish dress (post 1953)... starting with 2 images extracted from Australian Army Standing Orders for Dress (in about 2012, I think).

The original blog post then goes on to show some of the relevant RAR Band insignia from the reference collection that we have amassed for the preparation of Volume 3 (which as many of you know, will cover QC period rank and trade insignia of the Australian Army).

For those of you who want to read my blather about the rest of the topic :) the balance of the post can be seen at:

I trust that this material will be of interest to some of the regulars here!)

Regards

Mark

Thanks Mark!

A great article. I've never seen the RAR kilt pin before. No doubt another hard one to find.

hi Mark
your pic of the badge looks brass.
the pic of the badge on the Glengarry looks whitemetal.
I have a whitemetal/chrome large version of this oversized badge. Got it from Vic Barracks Melbourne about 10yrs ago.
I will try and get a pic shortly.
thoughts?

Mick,

I thought that showing the images taken from ASODs would help to provide a proper context for those Scottish Dress items that really aren't seen in public spaces (save for ANZAC Day Parades and Armistice Day).

Based on the published images, those kilt pins are specific to the RAR Band, but I have yet spend the time researching exactly who is authorised to wear what... because there has been a suggestion that Officers may have yet another variant... I shudder to think about that:)

BC,

There are a couple of variants of the RAR Band's over-sized badge for the Glengarry. Vol2 (@CB 323) shows the badge (fronts and backs) in chrome and gold plated versions of both the counter-struck and the (later) spin cast variants.

Having said that, the recent image I posted here and on FaceBlab:) etc, is apparently a white metal counter-struck version, which looks like it has a protective lacquer coating... so that in angled light, it actually looks to be a plale gold colour.

I hope that helps?

Regards
Mark
