Hello Everyone,

Thank you for accepting me in to your forum. I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Dennis and I am a long time US militaria collector (40 years+) from Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I am also a member of the US Militaria Forum.

Over the course of the last 40 years while rooting though, flea markets, thrift store, junk and war surplus shops in search of US militaria I would occasionally find a British Badge and if the price was right I would pick it up and put it in the pile. I have also acquired a few from UK members of the US Forum.

I found your site while trying to identify and determine the age of some of the badges that I have collected over the years. After reading some of your posts, especially the "Fakes and Forgeries" thread I am beginning to think that I may have some duds in my collection. That thread was quite a wake up call, I honestly didn't know that British badges were faked as much as other militaria. I suppose I should't be surprised, everything is faked these days. That brings me to why I am here, I would like to learn more about these fascinating badges and I figure this it the place to ask lots of stupid questions and, to help me sort the junk from the quality badges.

Again, I thank you for accepting me in to your forum. I doubt I'll be able to contribute much to the collective knowledge but I look forward to learning. and I ask your patience with the dumb questions.

That said here are some photos of my meagre collection. I look forward to all your comments and observations about exactly what I have here.

I have also had a look at this thread.

Badge 27 in photo 3 is an 11th Hussars badge, caps are about 38 mm high and a collar is about 32 mm high.

In photo 4 you have a selection of Australian general service badges.

No's 31 & 32 are either WW1 or 2, its very hard to tell them apart. Very few WW1 Rising Suns have a vertical slider and are English made. All others have 2 lugs. Some rising suns have a makers name on the back. Have a look on the flat section on the left between the crown and the rays of the sun. These 2 are most likley WW2.

No 34 is a 1948 - 53 issue it has the kings crown but the title has changed to Australian Military forces, this type was used in Korea.

No's 33 & 35 are a pair of standard collar rising suns and are probably WW2. The same thing applies re makers naming as above.

The shoulder title is a standard issue used from WW! up t the 1950's.

re your pics, here are your Canadian badges:

17/18 - Can't tell if these read 'CANADA' or 'UBIQUE' but if they have lugs, they are Canadian, if they have sliders, they are British. #17 looks like the 'spinning wheel' officer type, with the wheel a separate piece with a wire or stud attachment in the hub. If they read Canada, they are WWI era.

21 is Canadian Grenadier Guards, WW2 vintage (or at least pre-1952).

37/41 are both pre-1924 Toronto Regiment. The same badge was used in WWI, so if there is a maker mark on the back (e.g. Tiptaft), it will help nail down the date better.

42 is a standard WWI (CEF) shoulder title.

44 is a Queen's Crown (hence post 1953) Perth Regiment

38/39/40 are all modern, or at least post-unification badges. I'm not up on these, so the only one I recognize for sure is the Logistics badge. You can get all the info you need for modern Canadian corps and regimental badges from the Canadian DoD/DHH website.

43 is modern Royal Canadian Army Cadets

45 is some sort of patriotic brooch/pin, and looks to be Victorian (turn of the century -- er, last century -- around 1900/Boer War)

David as for #17 #18 The both say "UBIQUE" #17 the darker one has Logs and #18 has a slider.

The 2 Toronto Badges as well as the Canada title I found all together in a small leather "Boys Brigade" pouch along with a dog tag (ID tag) and a WWI German match safe.

#17 is Canadian, then. The other is British. Re the Toronto Regiment badges, I'd say the environment you found them in pretty much makes them CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force), WWI "3rd Infantry Battalion" (Toronto Regiment). Possible maker marks you might see on the backs are Tiptaft, Gaunt or Rosenthal. Also unmarked. The same badge was used up to about 1924.

You might see a maker mark on the Royal Canadian Artillery badge as well, which can help date it. Nice looking badge, IMHO.

38 & 40 are post-1968 badges. 39 is a Physical Education and Recreation Instructor (PERI) Branch cap badge and 40 is a Dental Branch collar dog.

No 45 Has flags of Canadian Provences, it might be able to establish a date from a Canadian member.
