Hello all
Finding out for friend.

You include RMLI, RMA etc rather than just RM?Some information in this pdf file:

The earliest royal marine infantry buttons didn't have the royal marines name on them that started in 1801. the link mentioned doesnt show those earliest ones which were silver for officers and pewter for other ranks.

They were a different design to the one shown as officer, 1767?
(I thought the one shown was of silver, a closer look suggests a yellow metal?)

These are the marine infantry buttons pre 1801. I would suggest getting don troiani excellent book as well insignia of independence he has a good write up on them on page 113

Super Lazio,
Thank you for this, I've passed it on to my friend and he's greatful to all who have answered my post.
This button, does it date as far back as formation, 1664, or is it not known?
Thank you again
Chris

There wernt any numbered or titled buttons worn by any of the british army until 1768. before that you had plain pewter buttons for the other ranks and the officers wore fancy gilt and silvered buttons following fashion. i think more work could be done in that early era using paintings ect. so these would be between 1768-1801

I’ve only ever traced one earlier, silver faced with incised anchor, these appear in two portraits that both date to 1755-1765 period. See picture, top left for an example that was found in New York

Any chance at a better view of the button bottom row, right hand end? D.J.
