Highland Light Infantry - 1910s-1920s
 

Hi,

here is a picture I have since a while already, from an unknown unit. Apparently showing men from a scottish cavalry unit, I would say in the years 1910s to 1920s.
Completetely here outside of my usual themes, hence asking please for your help to try identifying this unit & time period.
Worth to mention that this is the first time I see a pic with british soldiers wearing an apparently cut down tartan trouser, used as a short.
Maybe the unit patch on the tropical helmet can help?

Any information to help id this unit, time period (& place where possibly taken) most welcome.

I believe they're infantry with bandolier equipment rather than cavalry (I have an idea they're Seaforths or HLI), they are wearing cut down trews which themselves may have been made from cast kilts at that time.

I was on the idea that wearing this way cartridge bandolier was a british cavalry only practice.

So Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment). Will have a look on the web for its history.

The bandolier equipment was introduced in 1903, superseded by the 1908 web equipment a few years later.

Some infantry in India continued to use of some parts of the equipment for some years and the bandolier was still in use by mounted troops until WWII.

As mentioned, definitely HLI. This was their standard uniform in India. Probably 1st Bn. just before WW1. The always wore the tartan shorts until some time after the war, when they adopted the standard khaki Bombay bloomers like the rest.

The Pioneers arm badge with bugle above is specific to Light Infantry or Rifles.

So, HLI or Scottish Rifles.

Pity they're not wearing hackles, 1 HLI wore green, 2 HLI white over red, would've pinned down which battalion, Cameronians wore black.

It would seem that most regiments that did have a hackle as part of the FSH badge did not always wear them; or at least only for special occasions.
