31 Division first divisional sign WW1

Hi all,

Does any member know the history or symbology please of the 31 Division's first divisional sign that was used between July 1916 and July 1917?

This was a red triangle with a white border with two white horizontal bars either side.

Thank you.

Talos,

I dont know what it means but understood it to be used on their Transport and by Divisional troops instead of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Roses symbol normally worn on uniform.

I will look in my copy of Holman’s book

In The Badges of Kitcheners Army it has the badge as Simon says used 'on Transport' with white and red roses used by divisional troops, Bilton makes a distinction between the usage of the two

Hi guys,

Thank you all for your very interesting replies.

I have learnt from another site that if you turn the sign a quarter turn to the left it looks like the number 31.

Best regards,

Talos
