it is supposedly from the gaunt archive??

This is a well known WW1 RS variation. I have seen it in both black and brown oxidised finish. There is a famous photo of either Kingsford Smith, or another famous Australian aviator, wearing collar badges that are clearly this pattern.

similar but not the same. the ends of the scrolls dont meet the bottom rays of the sun. very interesting
