This is book 1. Book 2 will be available in April which is about Oman. Book 3 will be available early next year on Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar.
The Military and Police Forces of the Gulf States, Vol.1 Trucial States and United Arab Emirates, 1951-1980
By Athol Yates and Cliff Lord
The United Arab Emirates were known as the Trucial States until 1971, during which time they were a British protected state. In 1971, Britain withdrew its protection and the seven Trucial States’ Emirates federated to form the UAE. Before 1971, three Emirates had formed militaries while the British controlled another. After federation, two more Emirates formed militaries with the former British-controlled military becoming the first federally-controlled force. The six militaries were unified in 1976 to create the UAE Armed Forces. The two largest Emirates had established police forces in the 1950s, and the others had all established them by the late 1960s. During the 1970s, police forces of the individual Emirates were increasingly federalised under the newly-established Ministry of Interior, although to a lesser degree than the militaries. Several Emirates during the late 1970s were able to exercise considerably control over the two types of forces in their territory. This book tells the history of all of these forces, including: • Trucial Oman Levies, formed in 1951, renamed the Trucial Oman Scouts in 1956, and the Federally-controlled Union Defence Force in 1971
• Abu Dhabi Defence Force formed in 1965
• Ras Al Khaimah Mobile Force formed in 1969
• Dubai Defence Force formed in 1970 • Sharjah National Guard formed in 1972
• Umm Al Quwain National Guard formed in 1976 • UAE Armed Forces formed in 1976.
The police forces are:
• Trucial Oman Scouts Police Wing formed in 1963
• Dubai Police Force formed in 1956
• Abu Dhabi Police Force formed in in 1957
• Ras al Khaimah Police Force formed in 1965
• Sharjah Police Force formed in 1967
• Ajman Police Force formed in 1967
• Umm Al Quwain Police Force formed in 1967
• Fujairah Police Force formed in 1969;
• Ministry of Interior’s Police Force formed in 1972
‘The Armed Forces of the Gulf States, Volume 1’ – the first of three volumes in this mini-series – is providing an in-depth history into each service, supported by plentiful of organisational charts and maps.
Volume 1’ is richly illustrated with exclusive photography, colour profiles and diagrams, detailing the uniforms, badges, insignia and equipment of the various forces over the time. As such it is an indispensable source of reference to the backgrounds on one of major military powers in the Middle East of today.

Very nice, Ajman is one of the two Emirates I need to complete the seven. Looking forward to ordering your book when I get paid at the end of the month.

I was looking forward to purchasing a copy, but, it is another website that requires an account, which means another password etc., I already have an A5 page full of passwords, no intention of adding any more.

Book

Got mine last Wednesday. Very impressed. A nice mix of information, period photos and insignia. Information about the UAE armed forces and their uniforms is hard to come by even when you live there. This book fills a large hole in our knowledge. Well done and I look forward to the Oman volume.
Andrew.

Bahrain collar badges

2 Attachment(s)
Attached are some pix of Bahraini collar badges which are in current use. While I do not know their official titles most seem fairly obvious. The two birds attachment is a mystery. It reminds me of the old Malayan Federation Signals cap badge of the Sea Tern. However Bahrain Signals cloth patch is a white lightning bolt on a green background. Perhaps some one knows.

For those interested in the military of Oman which is Vol 2 it will be on sale some time in November this year. It is running about 6 months behind.
