Here they are. These were the names suggested at at the Ex-Servicemen's Conference held in Capetown on 2 March, 1921. I see that it wasn't so much related to a name for the BL but for naming the British Empire Service League. This was to be to provide: "aftercare for Imperial soldiers" (makes them sound like some household appliances...) The names were, in order of preference: 1) Comrades of the British Empire 2) ]British Legion of Comrades 3) British Empire Federation of Comrades Interesting to see the use of "federation" , "legion" and repeat use of "comrades" Actually not that potty after all but the B.E.S.L. was probably the best! |
