DCLI Officer's silver beret badge

Hi again all,

Another nice and not so easy to obtain. A Duke Of Cornwall's Light Infantry Officers silver (unmarked) beret badge. Long silver loops and the badge measures 33x30mm. The badge itself is not covered in K&K but I believe this is post-1951 issue badge.

Cheers Dean

Hi I have exactly the same badge ,purchased approx 2 months ago I have recently seen 2 others for sale.I am not placing mine in my collection until i have obtained a 2nd opinion from a collector who i suspect has the largest cornwall L.I collection outside the museum

Much appreciated thanks.

I have seen trends where a particular badge "floods" the market and this could be one but better silver badges are not cheap to repro.

Look forward to your further input on this one, cheers Dean.

Hallmarked silver DCLI.

Good evening.

And then there`s a hallmarked silver version by J R Gaunt and Son, assayed Birmingham, either 1921-22, or 1946-47, you choose. Size 32mm x 26mm. Loops east-west.

I have a number of examples and all feature the mouthpiece of the bugle horn to the viewer's right.

Beret badge? Collar badge?

You decide.

Enjoy.

S.T.

Hi S.T,

I did wonder if a silver badge would cross your radar?

Yes I did consider a collar but the size from collars I have had was different and so I opted for the beret badge but as you say it would be hard to make an absolute call without provedance.

Appreciate the input, cheers Dean.

A long lugged badge, about 30mm tall, a different striking to the one shown in post no. 1.

The collar sized badge by Officers was worn in the beret and the hat from the 50s up until the regiment ceased to exist. The DCLI TA continued as a separate regt to the SLI after the regular battalions amalgamated.
Please accept my apologies i stated "beret" when i wrote the original post. I should have stated "collar".

Thanks, I'd been searching for a post (I think in a thread re. KLR) that mentions the reduction in size during the 1950's of badges worn on the cap by some regiments but couldn't remember if DCLI was listed and can't find the post.

Ill dig some images out over the weekend. I may possibly have some notes regarding it, all the LI regts went from cap badge to beret sized badge in the 50s. The exceptions were the HLI who didnt wear a beret anyway.

I didn't realise that the DCLI did. DCLI OR's as well as officers?

Mike H 29-12-18 11:17 AM

The Officers went to a collar sized badge for wear in cap and beret. The ORs retained the normal sized badge .

Thanks for that

Image is of the laying up of colours for the 3rd Btn ,at Bodmin early 60s. The difference is badge size can be clearly seen.
