I hesitate to post such a mutilated badge, but it seems have some history and I would love to know more about it. First off, who would have worn it and what was cut out of the center? Was it common to alter badges in this manner? What time period are we talking about? Thanks in advance for your comments.

I think it would be a WW1 1st South African Infantry Brigade shoulder title, similar to this one. Read about Delville Wood to see how they fared on the Somme.
