RWF fur cap grenade

2 Attachment(s)
A recent buy, a RWF fur cap grenade, the fixings are missing and there is a piece of the grenade at the bottom is also missing.

The badge appears to have been plated, probably for a Volunteer Btn. but the missing piece at the bottom of the grenade is not IMO damage but very carefully cut out as if to fit around something,

Ideas welcome and thanks for looking.

Some german cockades have a ventilation hole behind the center and a "net" in the center.
May be there was a ventilation hole in the fur cap and that is the reason for the "cutout" " ?
My two cents ......

Vent hole

Thanks for the reply, it's a possibility, although being Fusiliers I have wondered whether it could be for a hackle although I have never seen this on other grenades.

Rob,
Is it possibly a badge that has been modified to hold back the corner of the Pioneer’s leather apron?

Tim, I can see where you are coming from, thanks for putting up the illustrations, something I had not thought about.

I think it's a conversion with the fixings removed, but what for?

Hi, is it missing a plume holder

Another possibility is that it once formed part of a piece of ‘trench art’ or a regimental table decoration like a cigar flame?

Rob,
The grenade badge worn on the pioneer’s apron is a fairly heavy badge and as you will know these fur cap grenades were not worn with plume holders as the plume was worn on the side of the fur cap. Having just checked my volunteers example I note that there is also a small piece missing from the bottom of the grenade on mine. Not something I had noted before.
Hwyl,
Kevin

I saw one very similar to this on ebay recently, it might have been the same one. I will see if I still have it saved in my watch list.

This is indeed strange, my missing piece is slightly larger than your example Kevin, but for why?
