The price blew me away!
I didn't realise that some UK anodised badges go for such a price. Mick |
The price of fame!
Good morning.
Good morning. I am not sure why one would be surprised: I have previously commented on this Forum about Lancs. Fusiliers in A/A on Mr Bosley's website disappearing in minutes for GBP600, and West Yorks. examples have gone at Auction for GBP700+commission & VAT. So, GBP 475 is chickenfeed. It goes to show, PT Barnum was right. And, hallmarked silver is as cheap as chips. Anyone seen a Parachute Regiment going cheap these days? Enjoy. S.T. |

A Gaunt badge with a Firmin slider.

Checked and replied.

Got to agree with you.
|
Judging the clandestine PMs and comments that are in this thread some must agree with me that this is a fantasy piece.
Look at the quality, it really is abysmal. The sphinx looks more like a sloth that's had a shock three days ago. The letter engraving is dire. The back of the badge also looks like it's a shed production. This is a "never was" badge. |
A/A DEVONSHIRE
The badge in itself appears fine to me - however it has been repaired on the back. The original slider would appear to be missing (originally JR GAUNT LONDON marked no doubt) and repaired using an incorrect FIRMIN slider. The original rich gold anodising on this early badge is in contrast to the much lighter gold tint on the added FIRMIN slider.
|
In some separate email correspondence I was having with Forum member hagwalther (Chris Marsh) prior to the commencement of this thread he'd pointed out the very same thing as Bess & Thomas - that the slider was not original to the badge. I trust Chris doesn't mind me repeating his comment.
Interestingly the badge was originally placed on ebay by Endici at GBP7.99 before it was withdrawn and resubmitted at GBP350. I have no personal issue with that, but an interesting bid run to GBP475 nonetheless. Cheers Mark |
With reference to the last posting.
I have noticed that endici has done this quite a few times over the last few weeks listing items at a low price then after a few days without any bids ends the sale only to then relist it at a higher price which then gets a bid right away and sells for a well higher price. Could it be he does not know what he has listed???? |

Thanks Mike

The Dorsetshire regiment with the scroll 'DORSETSHIRE' is certainly not a fantasy piece and it is always best to know what one is commenting on before making such statements. A good book may help. As Mark states. The badge body and slider are from two different pieces which is pretty obvious if one knows anything about the manufacture of A/A badges. Again, a good book may help. To sell for 475 GBP for an item cobbled together from two different sources, is to me, quite nuts. I would value this item at around 5 GBP. Regards Chris |
You mean Dorsetshire dont you Chris.
|
:D
Chris, I'm sure the good book you refer to is not an Atlas! Lol Andy |

A GOOD BOOK
chris, it's not a good book at all! it's so much more than that, an excellent publication with outstanding photography and backed by so much factual information. definitely the serious anodised badge collectors bible, I learned so much from reading this book. especially like the chapters on lugs and sliders. regards john

Dorsetshire
Hi I went for this badge out of a desire to own one my fault for not doing my research or asking the seller has admitted his mistake in not seeing the repair and agreed that it was a no sale chris
|
Good on you Chris.
|
So I wonder where is the badge now?
|
Are both the Dorset and Dorsetshire anodised of similar rarity or is the Dorsetshire the very scarce one? Kevin

Although it appears that there are both void and non void versions of the Dorsetshire. |
Cheers , I picked a Dorset one up a few years back before the Anodised prices began to rise, Kevin

Not sure if there are any decent pics showing an un-voided AA badge with Dorsetshire scroll.
Whether voided or not, an original, AA Dorsetshire Regiment cap-badge, with Dorsetshire scroll, in good condition is an ȕber-rarity, with less than a handful of known examples. Unlike Dorsetshire scrolled badges, the Dorsetshire Regiment badge with Dorset scroll is a common badge. AA Devonshire Regiment badge can often be picked up quite easily for probably around £20. Attached below are pictures of my unvoided Dorsetshire badge. Mike - as the picture you attached of the voided version is a bit small, how sure are you of the authenticity of that badge? Just curious, no aspersions being cast. Paddy |
A 100% certain Paddy, ithats why i made the statement about the two versions.it came from a friends collection.have another image ,which shows the badge. But its not mine to post,im sure he'll post it .
|
Mike
Many thanks, I won't hold my breath on being able to obtain one at a reasonable price Paddy |
Paddy ,you seem to be going blue. Are you having trouble breathing ?
A fellow member bought one at War and Peace a few weeks ago. My Dorsetshire image came from the same person that sold me the large Liverpool UOTC badge years ago. I never realised that there was two versions of the Dorsetshire until I saw the ebay one.I also have an image of what appears to be an unfinished all siver one(non voided). |
