17th Lancers in brass?
 

All,
Were there ever any all brass 17th lancers badges produced? I saw what appeared to be perfectly good badge (long tapering slider, good patina and fine strike), but not sure if they made them in the brass economy. Thanks,

Ive always thought the cap badge that was worn during WW1 was brass. There was one on eBay a while ago, the only right one Ive ever seen, it came with a bed plate. After double checking my book they should be in guilded metal for WW1, so yes brass.

P.S. This isnt a cap badge, it was refered to by the 17th, 17th/21st and QRL as the 'Motto'.

Brass ones exist but they are not economy as they were one piece and w/m. They have been widely reproduced. Oddly K&K list the 17st Lancers as having an all brass one but do not describe it as an economy badge.

The standard motto for WW1 and WW2 was white metal.

When I'm home I'll post my small collection of lancers badges, I have IIRC two different brass one and collar dogs to go with them.

According to K&K the 17th's motto is described as ....
" In white-metal. Officer's in silver, also in bronze. An economy issue in bronzed-brass was issued in 1916. "

I stand corrected. But Hugh King was not infallible. [B]Bronzed brass[B] does not sound like an economy badge however but a completely difffernt pattern. You don't bronze an economy badge but you might bronze a badge for wear on a particular order of dress - tropical for example? I have only ever seen contempory photos of the regt with wm badges.

Hmmm. Now what is "bronzed brass"? The one I saw was bright brass and certainly not bronzed in any way. If what I saw was good, they were produced on brass. If it was bad, perhaps not?

I thought for some reason 21st Lancers thread wrong. I believe there to one of the badges in question on the pic

The problem with this description is that it could well be an Officer's badge and wrongly attributed as an ORs.

If anyone wants to know anything about the badges of any of the regiment that made up QRL please let me know, I did some work for RHQ at Grantham a number of years ago and I know a few people there.

One of the things I wanted to clear up today with Mr Holtby (the curator of the regimental museum as Belvoir) was which badge was worn during WW1 and this is what he said:

Here is my "brass" motto. The seller unfortunately polished it a bit thinking it would sell better that way! The back shows some of the original patina. What say ye to this?

I'm no expert but the slider's taper looks too harsh akin to the early restrikes, the colour of the metal looks wrong also to me. Afraid I would give it the thumbs down, but that's coming from an infantry collector's point of view.
